Investment Objective and Strategy

The ALPS | Metis Global Micro Cap Value Fund seeks long-term growth of capital by investing in micro cap companies across the U.S., international and emerging/frontier markets. Micro cap companies are generally defined as those with market capitalizations of $50-$750 million.

The benefits of investing in Global Micro Caps

  • DIVERSIFICATION: Global micro cap has a low correlation with other asset classes, providing significant diversification for investors
  • OPPORTUNITY: Worldwide, there are over 12,000 investable stocks that are often overlooked by investors
  • EXCESS RETURNS: Global micro cap stocks have outperformed large and mid-cap stocks by over 3% a year over the sixteen years through September 2016²

Over Half the World's Investable Companies are Micro Cap1

The importance of a DISCIPLINED VALUE PROCESS:

The fund uses fundamental knowledge of 60+ global industries to find undervalued stocks worldwide, building portfolios from the 'bottom-up'. This approach is deployed systematically which enables efficient analysis of large numbers of investable stocks, and limits the potential for behavioral bias in portfolio construction. The fund's long-term focus continually seeks to capture the value premium.

How this Fund Fits in Portfolios

The opportunity and diversification of a Global Micro Cap allocation may benefit portfolios in several ways:

  • As an additional, active component of an existing equity allocation: investors can use Global Micro Cap to replace or complement existing small-cap equity allocations, gaining exposure to the smallest segment of the world's investable stocks.
  • In a core/satellite framework: Global Micro Cap provides alpha-generating potential as a "satellite" allocation.
  • As a complement to alternatives such as private equity or hedge funds: Global Micro Cap can fulfill a range of investment objectives and portfolio needs, especially diversification and return enhancement. Since 2000, when paired with hedge funds, Global Micro Cap has delivered greater returns with less volatility than the S&P 500.

Opportunistic Approach:

  • Active, bottom-up stock selection seeks out potentially undervalued issues wherever they may be found
  • Continual evaluation of large opportunity set, identifies 'undiscovered' companies
  • With so many stocks to choose from, the Metis approach provides diversification while still building a high conviction "best ideas" portfolio

Expertise

  • On average, the Metis team has 18 years of global investment experience across developed and emerging/frontier markets.
  • The teams' deep fundamental knowledge and global industry expertise strengthen security selection

2 Source: S&P, September 2016. Global Micro Cap Index returns are represented by the S&P Global < $500million Index. The returns of this index are shown net of witholding tax. The S&P Global < $500million Index with net dividends is a comprehensive, rules-based index measuring global stock market performance of micro- and small- capitalization companies. It represents all issues in the S&P Global BMI (Broad Market Index (BMI) whose market capitalization at time of index constitution is less than $500 million. The S&P Global < $500M Index includes companies from both developed and emerging nations. This index includes dividends and distributions net of withholding taxes but does not reflect fees, brokerage commissions or other expenses of investing. Global Large Mid Cap Index returns are represented by the S&P Global LargeMidCap Index. Combining the S&P Global LargeCap and S&P Global MidCap indices, the S&P Global LargeMidCap comprises the stocks representing the top 85% of float-adjusted market cap in each developed and emerging country. It is a subset of the S&P Global BMI, a comprehensive, rules-based index measuring global stock market performance.
